HIV situation in Thailand
The annual new HIV infections reported nationwide declined from 2010 to 2019. This trend was attributed to the comprehensive condom program, which promotes consistent condom use among sex workers and their clients, thereby reducing HIV and STI transmissions.

However, HIV transmission persists at elevated levels within certain demographics. As of 2020, an estimated 12% of men involved in same-sex relationships and 3% of individuals engaged in sex work (4% of male sex workers and 1.7% of female sex workers) in Thailand were living with HIV. What are the HIV tests offered by PrEP by CWC?
We offered 2 types of HIV tests:
1. HIV rapid test
This test utilizes the fourth-generation rapid test kit and can detect the virus 3-4 weeks after exposure. Its advantages include low cost and results available in approximately 30 minutes.
2. HIV genetic material detection: nucleic acid amplification test (NAT) or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test
This method can detect the virus approximately 7 days after exposure. However, this test is relatively expensive, and results are available in about 4-5 days.
Who need HIV screening?
1. Sexually active individuals
Particularly those who engage in unprotected sex or have multiple sexual partners, should undergo regular HIV screening. This is especially crucial for men who have sex with men (MSM), which are at increased risk of HIV transmission.
2. People who inject drugs
Especially those who share needles or other drug paraphernalia, are at increased risk of HIV transmission and should undergo HIV screening regularly.
3. Individuals with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
People who have been diagnosed with other STIs, such as syphilis or gonorrhea, are at higher risk of HIV infection and should undergo regular HIV screening.
4. Individuals with a known HIV-positive partner or unknown HIV status
It's important to consult with our healthcare providers to determine the appropriate frequency and type of HIV screening based on individual risk factors and testing preferences.
